SWEPT OFF A PIER

A MAX AND A BOY LOSE THEIR LIVES.

GISBORNE, This Day

A man, whose name is unknown, and two boys, Gordon Brown (P7fd 14) and Fred Allen (15) were swept oil the groyne at the entrance to the river, while fish ing. this morning. The man disappeared, and has not eince been seen.

Allen was saved by life lines being thrown, which he grasped. An attempt wasc made to Hewitt Douglas, a dredgehand. jumping into the water and holding on to him for ten minutes-: but owing to the force of the seas, tand the boy was drowned, Douglas with difficulty regaining the pier.
