CANADIAN MAIL STEAMER

AUCKLAND, April 9. The Canadian mail steamer Makura, with European, Canadian, and American mails, arrived at Auckland shortly aftev 8 a.m. from Vancouver, via Honolulu and Suv. The Makura brought an exceptionally large mail from Europe, Caiiada, America, and the Islands, consisting of 757 bags. About 300 bags were dealth with at Auckland, the balance being despatched South by the Main Trunk express to-night. DOCTOR'S NARROW ESCAPE. AUCKLAND. April 9. Dr A. C. Purchas had a very narrow escape from being killed this evening, when his motor-car was smashed to fragments through being pinned between two tramcars in Manukau-road, Parnell. He was trying to cross the rails when a downward tram struck the motor-car, hurling it against an upcoming car, and reducing it to fragments. The doctor had a most- miraculous escape, coming off with a severe shaking and some cuts from flying fragments ->f glass. SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS. (Rec. 10.15 a.m.) CAPETOWN, April 10. Sir T.
