A young man promoted n 6weep at the Ellerslie race course on Monday on the St. George Handicap, and induced a number of speculative clients to risk their half-crowns, in it. The prize was to be paid out after the race at an ■appointed place, but when the holder of the winning horse, which turned out to be Antoinette, turned up to receive his monev the young man was not to be found. Subsequently the impromptu sween promoter was arrestel. and today he was fined £lO, dn default two months in gaol.
