THE PROPOSED RECREATION GROUND.

GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY PROMISED.

In connection with the proposed acquisition of a portion of the Maitai Estate tor a recreation ground, Mr H. Atmore, M.P., who has actively interested himself in tile matter, yesterday received the following letter from the Premier, bir Joseph w'ard : "With reference to your letter of the 29th ult., re the question of obtaining a subsidy towards the purchase of a recreation ground by the Nelson City Council, on the banks of the Maitai river, 1 am favourable to the proposal that the Government should contribute one-half of the amount required as compensation for the purpose mentioned, and will agree that it the amount of compensation is assessed by the Court at J31400, the Government's contribution shall be £ioo. If the Court assesses the compensation at less than JGI4OO, then the Government's contribution will be decreased proportionately, that is, the Government will contribute one-half of the compensation assessed by the Court." The C ity Council will require to take the necessary steps under the Public Works Act to have a Compensation Court set up to determine the amount to be paid tor the land which it is desired to acquire.
