REPORT 'OF'WSPEUTOR. GENERAL. (By Telegraph.) (l'Tom Our Parliamentary Reporter.) ■ WELLINGTON, Tliis .Day; The annual report on Mental Hos. I'itals was presented to the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The Inspector-General, Dr Frank Hay, states that the number of patients on December 31st was 3670, of whom 2160 were males and 1510 females — an increase of 122 compared with the average increase during the previous five years of J 02. The proportion of the total insane to the total population inclusive of Maoris, was 1 in 186. The proportion of the male'insane to the male population was 1 in' ' 257, rnd the proportion of the female in. sane to the female population was 1 iri 235. According to : a table in the report the principal causes of insanity oi the patients under treatment were: —Critical periods 20.18 per cent; al. coholic 11.68 per cent, heredity 10.15 per cent, congenital mental defect 863 per cent, and mental stress 8.25 per cent. In T0.53 per cent of cases the cause of insanity was. not known.
