HOSPITALS CONFERENCE.
(United Pkess Association..) WELLINGTON. Wednesday. At the. Hospital Conference to-day there was a discussion on the health of the Native race. Mr Powell (Waipiro) moved : (1) That legislation be passed* as scon as possible transferring the control of contagious diseases from the Department of Native Aifairs to the Public Health Officers.
(3) That in order to coroserv© the Maori vace,'' the question of maternity and infant mortality be diea.lt with directlv by responsible officers of the Hospital Boards, a.nd as a further fuarant&s of this, that the, Native race should be brought into conformity with Europeans under the Registration Act; and this should' be applicable not oniy to deaths, but to births and marriges. (3) That narses should work among '.the Maoris in order to instruct them in accordance with, the European method' of living.. After hearing a statement as to what the Department had done, and intended doing, the mover withdrew clauses 1 and 3 .and clause 2 was carried unanimously.
