THE AUSTRALIAN CABLE SUBSIDY. THE BILL DISCUSSED. REDUCTION OF CABLE RATES ADVOCATED. [Press Association —Copyright.] (Received 10.40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. A lengthy debate took place on the application for leave to introduce a Cable Subsidy Bill. Mr Bruce Smith maintained that the Government had no right tc. pay £6OOO to help the papers to get news. They were commercial ventures, and should get their own news. It was simply a bonus for the press. Mr Deakin (Leader of tho Opposition) thought that a better way would bo to reduce the cable rates for tho press. This would involve the Government in no responsibility. If a subsidy were (riven the Government would bo responsible for the character of the news given. He supported tho Bill, and claimed that better com petition was needed. The debate was adjourned.
