SUGGESTED BY M. CLEMENCEAU.
"Some months ago he was designated to me by a shrewd observer as the certain successor of M. Clemenceau on the assumption that the Ministerial career of that gifted Minister would run its course at least till the. elections. It is very significant that, notwithstanding M. Bnand's 'Socialist' past, and the constant attacks to which he has been subjected as Minister of Justice and of Public Worship, neither his political adversaries nor his political friends have at tho present juncture ventured to suggest that there could be any other candidate who was nearly so fit as he to succeed M. Clemenceau. It is, perhaps, equally significant that M. Briond's was the name suggested to M. Fallieres by M. Clemenceau himself for the Premiership."
