MR CLEMENT WRAGGE'S OFFER TO THE CITY.
BEFORE -THE CITY COUNCIL.
REFERRED TO COMMITTEE. Mr Clement Wragge's offer to the city (of a loan collection of conchological and other scientific exhibits, ultimately to become the property of the city by gift) full particulars of which were published in these cplumns on Tuesday last, came before the City Council last evening the letter containing the offer beirig forwarded by Mr F. G Gibbs. In a short covering letter Mr Gibbs said that unfortunately there was no room in the Museum for the collection Mr Wragge mentioned. Cr Grace moved that the letter be referred to the Finance Committee, as it contained reference to a rate. The offer would require a great deal of consideration. The letter was a very interesting one, and it would no doubt be a great thing to have such an extra■ordinary—such a remarkable— man as Mr Wragge living in our midst. Cr. Field, in seconding, said that any town in the Dominion would be very glad' tO get Mr Wragge's collection- Il Nelson knew when it had a good oppor-. tunity it would take advantage of the offer. Mr Wragge, however, made one mistake— neither science nor literature was encouraged as it should be by the Council. Cr. Pettit: Hear, hear. Cr. Grace: Boxing! Cr. Pettit considered that Mr Wragge's was a splendid offer. It was probably owing to the neglect of the Council" that a good Institute and Museum were not now in course of erection. The motion was carried.
