HOUSE DESTROYED AT CHRISTCHURCH.

(United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A two-storied wooden house of 7 rooms In Worcester-street, which had been unoccupied for threo months, and recently renovated preparatory to reoecupation, was entirely destroyed by fire last evening. The alarm was given, and two steam engines, a horse chemical, and a motor chemical, with eighteen men, turned out; but the Are had a strong hold when first observed, and it was some time before a supply of water was available. The chemical engines do little more than prevent the sproal to adjoining buildings. The water was eventually obtained from the East ChTistchurch school batb, both steam engines being used to force the water Tound tho intervening block. The house was the property of Mr W. Batt, and was insured in the Standard office, the amount not being available. The adjoining boardinghouse had a narrow escape.
