THE LICENSING ELECTION AND THE SHOPS HOLIDAY.
10 THE EDITOB. Sir,—Thinking perhaps that you nre v bettor }umd at solving conundrums than I am I write to ask if you will kindly answer the following, "Why are ' the shops in Nelson compelled to close this afternoon?" I have been thinking j the matter out, and can find no valid . reason in my own mind. The election to-ilay is ono that first and foremost concerns the hotolkcepcrs, and by all means compel them to close, but why the long-suffering shopkepers of this Dominion should bo forced to suspend all business and upset all order of work, is past my comprehension. The polling booths being open all day any person who cares to trouble about voting at all at this election could do sc in the dinner hour. Two-thirds of the law* in this country only tend to hamper and harass the people, and the sooikt .the people raise a united protst the better it will bo for all concerned^ I am, etc., ,f. H. WALKER, :< Bi idge'street, 9/3/'O9. 1
