FREETRADERS AND FOREIGN COMPETITION.
(Received March 9, 9.4 a.m.) LONDON, Monday. Though heckled in the House of Commons concerning the use of Norwegian granite a"t the Kosyth Docks instead of Irish or British, Air Burns, President of the Local Government Board, refused to grant the Admiralty £30,000, the difference between the cost of Scandinavian and British granite for the purpose of giving employment. The "Daily Express" reports that MiHerbert Gladstone, Home Secretary, has ordered from French and Belgian firms many thousands of pounds' worth of mailbag canvas, the difference between British and foreign tenders being about a halfpenny a yard. In the House of Commons Mr LloydGeorge, Chancellor of the Exchequer, replying to Mr W r Field (Nationalist), said that the Government were considering the- possibility of making the American Beef Trust pay income tax on profits arising from transactions in Bri tain.
