At the Canada Club'« dinner, replying on behalf of the Imperial Forceß, Colonel Hoad, Commonwealth Commandant, alluded to the benefits of the inauguration of the Imperial gen-eral staff. He emphasised that Australians' interest in military matters would be realised. If Australia Tiad to be defended, it would be almost entirely by her citizen soldier?. The Federal Government has decided to at once order two torpedo destroyers of the river class, and of the latest approved type. The are wanted to serv« as models for boats to be built afterwards in Australia. It- is the intention of the Government to send to England skilled operatives to be employed by the successful tenderer for the construction of the vessels. On completion of the contract, the men will return, and be employed in building additional vessels locally.
