Dr. Findlay, Minister of ths Interior and Magistrates Kettle and Itorthcroft, who paid a surprise visit tp the Pakatoa In*!>ria*es ' Home, found the inmates at dinner, and ■expressed satisfaction with the food and the Salvation Army management generally. .Replying io a protest against commitments for two ■ years by Southern Magistrate^, the Minister" ' ! said, that if a man, by good conduct, could satisfy the officers that he could be trusted at large, and. that he w.is cured of the drink habit, the Government would favourably consider and recommend a remission of part of tho sentence.
