..There are in circulation and in the possession of old residents, business people and others, several of the copper tokens of the early provincial days when coin was scarce and promises to pay in metal were circulated as currency. One of these, singularly enough, found its way to Gisborne recently, and passed into a till as an ordinary penny, which it greatly resembles. Mr W. Rowell of Gisborne, who took the token for a coin, writes as follows .-—"Last Friday I discovered this coin in my cash register, and as an old Nelsonian it appealed to me as having an unusual interest, because I have no "recollection of the firm. Mr Paaeley (accountant for Common, Shelton and Company fiere) tells me that Everett Bros, bought out this firm. However, I regard it as a strange coincidence that this coin should fall into the hands of an old Nelsonian right up here in Gisborne." The token bears the name of "J. M. Merrington and Co. , wholesale and retail drapers and outfitters, Nelson," and on the reverse, somewhat defaced by age, ie a representation of a figure standing by the seashore. There is also a hole in the copper, showing that the token has been worn as a keepsake. There are scores of these metal tokens knocking about Nelson, and doubtless the Institute Museum would be glad to get them to preserve as a relic of past tinies.

Messrs Levien and Rollet will -hold an auction sale of grooeruv-, crockeryware, clocks, watches, etc., at their Mart on Saturday next. On Wednesday, 19th inst., the firm will fold a stock sals at the White Hart Ya*dß, Richmona. t

. Tbe concluding sentence in a portion of our report of the condition of the waterworks dam in our issue of yesterday seems to have been misunderstood. It was stated that as there was an intake of at least a 16-incll supply and i arl outgoing of a 12-inch pipe supply the gradual leakage was, roughly, three inches. It should be explained that the 12-inch supply intake, plus a9inch pipe leakage, represents the quantity of water entering the reservoir, leaving as the practical surplus, if there were no leakage, the supply of a 9-inch pipe. That is to say, without leakage, the reservoir should be full and more in spite of the consumption and the drought. The contents of a 15---inch diameter pipe is equal to the contents of a 12-inch aiid 9-inch pipe combined.
