THE NELSON RAILWAY DEPUTATION. To the Editor, Sir,—lt is rilways a healthy . sign when, the .residents . of a. district evince an interest in affairs affecting the prosperity of the district, and it is pleasing to note the recent accessions to the membership of the Nelson Inland Communication League, also th* activity displayed by the new Executive. Witn the use of a litfle discretion, much good can sometimes be done by such a body in strengthening the hands of the ejected representatives of the peopla in their efforts to obtain due recognition -by the responsible authorities of the rights of the district. But in order to ensure full pub)ic confidence in sucb body, care must bs exercised that ally action they may tflke is entirely free of any possible, bias or feeling, Otherwise iiif object desired., miglit Bd frustrated. ,1 am led to make tiiese tfniarM >; fs ' JLs§ action taken with -regard *„t b yiß pro- ::- posed deputation to ;Welingtoa'-in "reference to railway extension. When Mr Graham was in Nelson recently, members of the League waited upon that gentleman with regard to the Government's action in connection with the matter, and he was able to satisfy theni that matters were_ not quite so. ba das they had previously appeared to be, but fie was evidently dubious as to any good being done by a deputation However, it was decided to send a deputation— so far, so good. Then, presumably, Mr Graham, as the city member, was. asked to inter* view tbe Premier; and, aseei^aitj «%k^ he could receive the rlep*ntatioii7-#»d^ again presumably, . Mr It.' McKenzie was asked to co-operate with Mr Graham in the matter. Later, a letter was received from the City Member stating that the Premier had not then been abh to fix a date for the interview, and this was followed by a telegram from Mr McKenzie to the effect that the interview had been arranged for Monday next. Immediately the Executive of the Loagu-j, a^tet^-on Mr 1 McKenzie's telfjtanj' ■ tmd' ■ d-s^J'Tl-'J -to notify Mr Graham that the deputation would leave Nelsoil en Saturd.-y. Now it appears tljat tho Premier is n-**f prepared to meet the deputation until about three weeks hence. The question arises, was it not possible ti have avoided thiß apparent muddle?. Perhaps it would be oetter in future for the League to confine itself to one mouthpiece, and that the proper one, and l thus prevent any su* T *"?stion bi ul- | terior. motives. However, sincere citizens may be in their "desire to promote l the interests of the place, they should be careful not to let their zeal override, their discretion, and common courtesy demands that the City's representative should receive proper recognition. Apologising for troubling you to such great length, I am, etc., LYNX-EYE, Nelson, August IS, 1907.
