REPRESENTATION THE HOSPITAL BOARD.

DISCUSSION BV THE CITY COUNCIL. iIIOVLD 'I HE NET-SOiV MEMBERS BESIONf Under ordinary business at lie meoting of the City Council la*t'eyenulg: Cr Franklyn referred to the representation ', of tho City Council on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and said the three gentlemen representing tno Council represented no one but themselves, and added to that was the fact hut they were discarded by the ratepayers. He moved that in order to secure representatives on the Board who were in sympathy with the Council's policy, Messrs Harrison, Pcttit, and Atmore be requested to forward their resignations to the Council.. One of heso gentlemen bad said in that Chamber that as soon as a Councillor was defeated or retired from public , life ie should resign from the Board. _ He would like to see provision made io that in future that would have to bft done.. Cr Grace seconded, not out of. feeling against the gentlemen, but because the motion was carrying out what the -representatives had expressed when they were in the Council. The three members of the Board did not ask the Council if they should continue to sit, bat asked the Board. It was not at' all an unreasonable thing to ask the members to retire and allow the Council to nominate members who would ebe in sympathy with the Council's policy. Cr. Hampson asked whether notice of motion should not be given. Ito was an important and debateable matter, and should not have been sprung upon the Council, The Mayor thought not. The members of the Board referred to need not resign unless they wished, but the Council could ask the members to resign. Cr Hampson said the motion -was to a large extent uncalled for. The member referred to were only following precedent. They had the work at their finger ends, and did the right thing, in retaining their seats. He did not .think it would be a wise thing to break tn^e Board half-way through its term of ofr fice. If the members resigned it, did not follow that the Council would be directly represented, as the filling of their places would rest with the Board, and not with the -Council. The Mayor said that two of the three members had in that Chamber said the Council should be directly represented on the Board, and ex-Cr. Atmore had said that if he was defeated, he would resign. Cr Robertson thought the Crs had quite enough before them, without going on the Hospital Board, and ho . would oppose the motion. Cr Field said that if the Council had to be represented on the Board it should be represented by members of ■ the Council. Cr. Snodgrass thought that the Board" desired the old members to remain, as the Board had important work on hand, and the members referred to had a good grasp of things. The motion was put, and declared carried on the voices, but a division was called for. The Mayor desired to leave the Chamber, as he did not care to vote on the matter. Cr. Grace was voted to the chair. - : The division was as follows: — Ayes (3) Crs. Field, Franklyn, GracS. NoeS ' (5) Crs. Robertson, Snodgrass, Bislay; AlcConchie, Sampson-.
