AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Mr Massey.. Leader of the Opposition, addressed a meeting test ni«hb under the auspices of the HuntJy Political Reform League. Ho said he was glad to acknowledge that the .Treasurer had a surqjus. The country was prosperous and the revenue buoyant, but he remarked upon the indebtedness of the colony increasing at the rate of £2,000,000 yearly. He did not see how this could be avoided. He urged that in the revision of the tariff the Government should reduce duties on the necessaries of life and, keep down the cost of living to the multitude. An amendment' was ( need«d in local government law" doih^ away with dual control by county- councils and voad boards and placing the finances oi local authorities on a more satisfactory basis. Mr Massey also dealt with the Land Bill.
