THE FUNERAL.
NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. The late Mr E. M. Smith was buried to-day with full military honours, and tho f unoral was tho largest ever seen in Taranaki. The Go t ernment offices and business places wera closed from one o'clock. People poured into town from the country districts, and it was estimated that close on ton thousand wit nossed the funeral, in which there were full musters of the headquarters companies and cadets and Garrison Hand and the Fiie Brigade in uniform participate !. The pal! bearers wero tbo Hons Fa I Joi.es, Carroll, and MoNab and Messrs Jennings, Maj .r, and Symep. M's.H.R., the 'lvracaki ropresentatiives in the House. Thero were also a large number of membors of both Houses of the Legislature present, and all the local bodies were fully represented. The cortege took twenty-five minutes to pais agivenpjiut. Some hundiedsof tele grams of condolence have been received from all partpi of ihe colony, and one fmm Sir .1. 11. Ward (London), and a large carriage v.a_ utiiitod to convey dozens of beautiful wrcalhs.
