DEATH OF MR E. M. SMITH, M.H.R.
I NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. Mr Edward Metcalf Smith, M.H.R., for the Taranaki electorate, died at the Hospital to-night as the resul tof a railway accident this morning. During a fit of giddiness deceased fell beneath the rails, but the wheels of the carriages did not pass over him. He was dragged some distance by the undergear lof the train, and received some severe bruises. He died shortly before 8 o'clock in the presence of his family. He represented New Plymouth from 1891 to 1896, and Taranaki since 1900. He was a prominent townsman.
