ANOTHER DRINK TRAGEDY.
A DRUNKEN MOTHER AND A STARVED INFANT. PROHIBITED BUT STILL SERVED. [United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. An inquest was held at the Hospital to-night on the body of an infant named Edith Mabel Malyard, who had died in the morning. It was stated in evidence that the mother of the child had been on a drinking bout from April Ist to 10th, and the death of the child had resulted from neglect during that period. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence that death was due to exhaustion following on marasmus, and the jury added a rider that in their opinion the police should make every effort to obtain information as to the places where the mother, who was a prohibited person had obtained liquor. It is understood that the mother of the deceased child will be charged with manslaughter at the Magistrate's Court to-morrow.
