NELSON'S FRUIT INDUSTRV
EXPORT OF APPLES TO KXC.r.AND. INITIAL SHIPMENT FROM MOTUEKA. The initial shipment of apples fror the Nelson district to England will b made in the course of a few days, Mo tueka growers having decided to de spatch several hundred cases. The va rities to be sent, it is understood, an Jonathans and Five Crown Pippins The shipment should arrive in Englanc by the middle of June. This wil perhaps be found a couple of week: later than is usually available, the ent of May being as late as the fruit shoulc arrive "in England if the best market i: to be caught. Early in June the firsr new fruits of the season are commenc ing to make their appearance in thi English markets, and of course to somi extent affect the prices of apples. However, it is very satisfactory to knov that the Nelson fruitgrowers have a length taken a definite step in regan to the export of apples to the Englisl markets. For years past the grower have been urged to plant in view of a: export trade, and it would now seer that suitable varieties have now com forward into sufficiently heavy bearin ( to warrant a commencement beini made with the exportation of apples It id sincerely to be hoped that th shipment will be a success in every wa; that the fruit will arrive in good or der, and that the pi-ices realised will b satisfactory and such as to give en couragement to the growers who hav associated to take the first step, an< to other growers who have apples of th quality to export. There is no reasoi whv the apple industry should not b to Nelson what it is to Tasmania, am now that a start is being made it ma; be anticipated that in the course of few years the shipments from this dis trict will run into hundreds of thou sands of cases. The Motueka grower are to be congratulated on their foi ward step, and all will hope that the may be rewarded by good returns fc j the fruit they are sending forward.
