Messrs Fell and Atkinson forwarder: account for £5, Mr Wilson's costs ii the proceedings he commenced against the Council in connection with th< blasting operations at Brook-streel quatry" — Crs. Pcttit and Lightband who had acted on behalf of the Coun cil, stated that they declined to com mit the Council to any liability in the matter. — It Wa3 resolved that the ac count b<S Hot paid. Mr W. Child applidd for renewal ol gas service in Weka-street. — Referred to Gas Cohimittee. Mr R. L. Mestayar requested payment of £130 17s 6cl, made up as follows :— £2s 4s visiting NeisOn ; £5 3; travelling expenses ; 3 per cent, or £2100 (contract N6: 6), £63; 3 pel cent, oti qpnlract No. 1 (£1250), £37 10s.— Resolved that the amount be paid: The Secretary . to the College Governors requested the Council to have th< gas service completed at the Boys' Col lege before Christmas. — Dealt with ir the City Surveyor's report. Mr P. Thomson again wrote in reference to drainage in Victoria-crescent, asking that the work be commenced. — The City Surveyor stated that the work would be started on Monday. Mr C. Hill forwarded account for 2s for inspecting hardwood timber at Normanby Bridge. — Account to be paid. Mr W. Shain, District Engineer, in timated that he had forwarded the Council's request for the loan of a plar for bridges to the head office, he noi having a suitable plan. The Secretary to the Fire Brigade wrote in reference to the need of z fire station for Toi Toi Vail -y— in Vie tiry Square — in view of the large in crease of dwellings in that locality.— Referred to Works Committee. Mr \V. Bhylock, Secret i-j to : the Nelson Plumbers', Gasfitters', and Sheet Metal Workers' Union, forwarded copj of proposed agreement between mailer plumbers and the Union as to hours, etc., and stated that a conference would be held on December 17th. — Resolved that the writer be thanked and informed that the Council would not send a representative to the conference. The Secretary to the Wakatu Gravel Co. wrote offering the Council metal at 2s 9d a load at the hoppers. — Referred to Works Committee. Messrs J. A. Redpath and Son, Chrislchureh, wrote offering to purchase up to 500 tons of coke at 6d a bag. — Referred to Gas Committee. From Mr K. Lawrence and others, requesting the Council t-o commence the formation of a footpath in Brough-am-street. — City Surveyor to attend to the matter-. WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Public Works Committee reported : — l. On letter from the Acting District Health Officer : That the bakers be notified that it is desirable that bread should be kept covered in transit. ' The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Finance Committee reported :— 1. On letter from Trades and Labour Council— (l) That this matter has been attended to; (2J that the man in question is not on the Council's pay-sheet, and that the Council are satisfied that he is competent to do the work for which he is employed ; (3) that as far as the Council are aware no men have been imported by the Council as stated, but that if the Trades and Labour Council know of any cases, if tlley will specify them the Council will inquire into the matter. 2. As to overdraft : That they recommend that the bank manager be asked to limit the overdraft to £20,000. The report was adopted. CITY SURVEYOR'S REPORT. The Surveyor reported that permits to connect with sewers had been granted Mr Duncan for Commercial Kctel and Mr Derrick, Shelbourne-street, and to connect with cesspit to Mrs Green. Tasman-street. 2. The work connected with clearing up streets and watertables was now in full swing, and should be completed by the end of next month. 3. The annual inspection of licensed vehicles was to take place next month. He asked the Council to fix the dates. 4. The 4in cast-iron mains for Waimearoad were expected to arrive next week. With regard to the resolution instructing him to prepare plans for the laying of new mains, he respectfully begged I to point out that in laying down new work to fit m with old mains and ser- ■ vices it was impossible to work to any I plan, as the levels of the different mains and services branching from the mains varied too widely, and could not be discovered until the ground was opened up. He would like the instructions of the Council in the matter, as a plan was absolutely of no use in connection with the present work. It was resolved that vehicles be inspected on Monday and Tuesday, 17th and 18th December; that tenders be called and an endeavour be made to complete the College gas service before Umstmas; that the City Surveyor be allowed to depart from the plans in connection with ceitain portions of the line of new gas pipes in Waimea-street. OTHER REPORTS. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the city was still free from fever or other infectious disease. He again referred to a nuisance at the sewer in Halifax-street.— It was resolved that the City Surveyor give the matter complained of immediate attention. The Abattoir report showed that the number of animals slaughtered in the first fortnight of the past month was: —Cattle, 61; calves, 29, sheep, 525 • lambs, 171; pigs, 38; total, 824; and for the last fortnight : Cattle, '69 • calves, 24; sheep, 493; lambs 218--pigs, 21; total, 835. ' ' An application for an increase of salary from G. Phelan, assistant at the abattoir was referred to the Abattoir Committee.
