NELSON HARBOUR IMPROVEMENT.

VISIT OP MB. LESLIE REYNOLDS. Mr Leslie Reynold?. C.E., Engineer to the Nel3on Harbour U >ard, arrived in Nelson to-day. and is consulting with the Board this afto noon on tenders for the dredge etc, for the harbour improvement works. The tenders are practically within the estimate, or at least not greatly in excess. Mr Reynolds, in a conversation, stated that the harbour works should be begun within six months of Lhe acceptance of the tender for the dredge, His plans and specifications are based on machinery of the very lab- st type, and the dredge will be invaluable not only in the harbour works, but also in the speedy reclamation of the mudflats. At the meeting of lhe Ilaibonr Board this afternoon, Mr Reynolds stated that the estimate of the cost ol the steel dredge (specialty designed for the harbour wo ks) was .£13.200, and that of the eight, barges .£4OO each, He said the dredge could not be built in Kelson, as the work was too big for the Anchor Foundry, steel castings being required. It was, however, he said, possible to manufacture the barges bere, The Chairman said lhat although che dredge could not ba built in Nelson it could be put together bere, thus employing a number of workmen for four or five months. The Boaidwasin Committee, considering the matter of prices and tenders for the dredge, at tho time that we went lo press, Mr Reynolds during his stay will also consult with the Nelson City Council in regaid to dr linage work*. He will see the Mayor after the Council meeting this evening, and he says that if he is appointed engineer to carry out the drainage of the city as well as the harbour works he will lake up his lesidence in Nelsou while the two works a-e iv progress, so as to be on the spot and give the schemes as much of his personal supervision as po-siblo.
