SECOND DAY.

The second day of the Nelson Jockoy Club's annua] meeting were held at Richmond Park yesterday, but although the weather was all that the most ardent sportsman could desire the attendance was rather disappointing, being below that of the seoond day last year. Though the fields were small the racing was very good, and the close finishes which resulted reflected much credit on tho judgment of the handicapper, Mr Henrys. In the Richmond Park Stakes the finish was a very pretty one, on'y about a head separating the three horses, the winner, Ci*«3oe, just passing Abydosand Hinekoa and thereby gaining a victory, in the last stride at the post. The hurdle race, as stated yesterday, again proved a very hollow affair, there being only two starters, one of these (Sea Wave) falling, and thereby depriving the race of any further interest beyond that manifested in the plucky manner iv which the rider (McMofran) remounted the mare and completed tho race. In the Saddle Trot the running of Warrigal, who was continually breaking, was unfavourably criticised, as was also the use the rider "

(Cotton) made of his whip in coming np the straight, tbis seeming likely to make Tornado break jast before reaching home. After the race Cotton was called before the stewards and severely cautioned. The other events of the day do not call for any special comment. In proportion bo tbe attendance the speculation on the lotalisator was again very good, the sum of .£1773 being put through the machines by Mr F. N. Jones. Th o total amount in ves'.ed dnring the niestiug was .£4376, as compare* with £4326 for las» y ar, and £3793 in 1900, « 4-401 in iHO9, £3416 is IS9B, and £±338 in 1897. ;ho officials all itiaplayed their usual courtesy, and the epacial thanks °f our tepr Bonta (vo are due to the Secretary, Mr Johu Glen, and his assistants, M G 3sra Wearing and Chisnall,. for Iheir re idinoss in supplying any necessary informal iou. Messrs frank and Win^taDley, who were kept busily engageihad charge vf tbe Telegraph office, and they tare every satisfaction t> the numerous patrons of this iudisponsable adjunct of the course appoint oionts. The Stoko Industrial Schxol Band,,, under Bandmaster Clarke again supplied tho ' music. The crotvd was again well-behav-ed, and the meeting was on the whole a most orderly one. On Wednesiiy Ibe c was a renewal of the former complaint as to the scarcity of t i - at-cla3a accomxodation on the railway, but the local management did all that was possible in putting on all available carriages. Yesterday however, the numbor travelling was not nearly so great, and there was no difliculiy in obtaining soals.
