The deceased was accorded a military funeral, as befitted a chief of great rank and a gallant soldier. In addition to the military, the procession included members of tbe local bodies, several distinguished visitors (Mr Carroll, Sir Walter Buller, Sir Arthur Douglas, and others), three Native brasa bands, and a great gathering of Maoris, numbering fully ]500. The Rev. A. o! H -lliarnß, assisted by three Native clergy, conducted the burial service.
