While passing through a narrow passage the boat struck a lock and capsized, tin each side there was kelp growing, and surf breaking, which rendered landing difficult, but Phillip Payne, a fourth occupant of the boat, managed to reach the shore after being in the water for over an hour and made desperate eilorts to save Cameron. The aecident happened only eighty yards from the landing place from where a man named Burgess heard ciies, but being very short-sighted he saw noihj ing of those struggling in the water.
