Sydney, April 26. A deputation of merchants and importers waited on the Premier to-day, and asked him to adopt a sliding scale for wiping out the Customs duties, otherwise holders of large stocks would he great losers. ,They were fully in accord with the Feeetradc principles of the Government, but deprecated extreme action. Mi- Reid said that plenty of warning hud been given of the intention of the (iovernment, and he distinctly refused to agree to the request. There would he no sliding scale and nolhmi> of the l)ibbs' tariff would be left. Ht would bring in auunmistukcablcFreetrado tariff on July Ist, and as the colony had always been for Freetrade, he would give it a chance [of knowing what true Free; trade really was.
