Haweba, Ootober 18. A young man named Thomas East, of Eltham, went out on Tuesday to catch a horse, and jnst as he was going up behind it, the animal let out with his hind foot and kicked him in the stomach. He died in great agony at 12 o'clock laat night. The young man's parents are residents of Pukekohe, near Auokland. Chbistohuroh, Ootober 15. A deputation from the North Canterbury Education Board waited on the Premier today, representing the necessity for expending £10,500 for new buildings in the distriot out of the vote for thai; purpose passed last session. The deputation expressed the opinion that a rate levied towards the maintenance of schools would be resisted by the publio. Mr Rawson, R.M., gave judgment for the defendant, on the ground that he had been fraudulently induced to sign an order for the 'Picturesque Atlas of Australia,' at the same time believing he was signing a patron's list for similar works referring to New Zealand, and that the canvasser represented that Soott would haye an opportunity to inspect the work before subscribing for it. Leave of appeal was refused, on the ground that the decision on the matter was upon fact, Metcalfe was not produced. His wife was acquitted, A man named MoKee, an old resident of Waihou, was found dead in a ditoh containing 18 inches of water near Te Aroha. An Assooiation in the interests of fruitgrowers has been established at Otahuhu. One of its objects will be the systematic export of fruit. An effort is to be made for the working of the low levels below the 640 feet level at the Thames, and it is suggested that the Companies owning the various mines should j unite in one Company for that purpose.
