IN MEMORIAM.
Sir,— Those who hate had the pHyil&re of knowing the late Mrs Macartney will read with a sad pleasure the following extraot from the St. Thomas' College Magazine. Ceylon, where Mra Macartney's family live, and where part of her married life was spent, Yours, &c, H. [EXTBAOT.] In the untimely death of this accomplished and muoh esteemed lady her. family and friends have sustained an irreparable loss. Endowed by nature with good abilities, she. spared no pains in their cultivation and in turning them to that highest of all uses— the welfare of her fellow-oreatures. While still a girl she delighted in helping onithe studies of others, and there are some among us who still remember the pleasure she took in imparting her kuowledge to the young in our own parish. Her first literary effort was a Christmas story whioh appeared in the St. Thomas' College Magazine. Since then she has been a frequent contributor to the newspapers of our antipodes. When the path of duty led her to Nelson, New Zealand, where she spent six or seven years, returning fchenoe but a few months ago, she' took "an, notiye' part in the Church's work, /and initiated some useful undertakings, suoh as Doroas Society and three different Bible Classes, meeting every, week in' her own house. She read a pape v r on Oh'uroh musio before the Diocesan gathering not long before her departure, whioh was deeply regretted by the Bishop of Nelson ;and the olergy, who took leave of her at a concert whioh she gave before leaving. A desire to obtain further ouiture for herself and hef ,two ohildren induced her to go to Leipzig, where she suooumbed to the . effects of a ohill, on December 28th, 1890, aged 85 years. Hers was a bright example of tjnijelflshhesa and of the devotion of a life to high objects. Her amiability and gentle winning, ways had made her beloved by all who had' the privilege of knowing her.
