CONCERT.
An excellent house assembled last evening at the Theatro Royal, when a complimentary oonoart was tendered by tho leading muaiaal people of Nelson to Professor Zimmermann. Punctually at eight the admirable little orohestra of the Harmonio Sooieiy opened the first part ..by playing the overture "liodoiska, " $reutzer, «hioh was maoh enjoyed,' The orouestra having vaaated their seats^they were quiokly -.filled bj? the ladies and gentlemen who. were Vo take part in 'the saored oantata, " Stabat Mater, " by Bossini. the soprano solos were entrusted to Mes- ! dames Houlker, P. Adams^ and, Ohatterton, the Rev. *J. <P, Kempthbrne and Mr A. Pliuoas. taking the tenor parts, and the Rev, P, W. Ohatterton aud Mr Grace the bass, •Miss .^Atkinsou acting as pianisiV A small, but woll Beleoted, chorus were also present. The music of the cantata is well adapted to the words, some of the parts being exceedingly graceful • The duet " Quis est homo " was very sweetly rendered by Mrs HojtUker and Mrs Admins, the voices blending exceedingly well together. The quartet " Sa'riota' Mater " was one of the prettiest things of the evening, The, singers in this were Mesdaraes P. Adams and Ohatterton and Revs, Kempohorne and Ohatterton. Mrs Ohatterton was heard to considerable advantage in the oavatiua '', Fao aii. potftem Ohrißti mortem," her well trained voioe being well suited to the musio. Mrs P. Adams rendered the air "inflammatus et asoensus " in oxoellent style, tb.9 running accompaniment being extremely prettyi whilst the ohorus interludes gave the whole a very pleasing effeofc. To Mr A. P. Lucas Was entrusted , the beautiful ;tenor solo , 'tCujus animara^ " Mr Ohatfcertoh rendered the bass solo "Pro peooacis 1 ' very effectively. Mr Grace had only a small part to take, which did not give 'him a ohafaoe to display his well developed voice. The last quartet without accompaniment was exoellently sung, the time kept being perfeot. Tho performers iv this were Mrs Ohatterton and.Miss Campbell, and the Revo Kempthorne and Ohatterton. flerr Zimmermanu.oonduote4 throughout, and the success of the Oantata ia greatly due to his perseveranoo and trouble. Miss Atkinson must also bo complimented on the way in whioh she aooompanied. After a brief interval the Orohestra gave Haydn's "Seranade, 1 ar ranged for strings by R. 0. Zimmermaun, after whioh Mrs Houlker delighted her hearers by singiug '■ Your Voice,' Berthold Tours, with violin obligato by Prof. Zimmermann, The singer who was enthusiastically recalled gave bb an encore song " Paok Clouds Away." I'rof . Zimtner,mann aooompauied by Misa Atkinson played ;" Sonata" (Ist and 2nd part) Rubinstein, whioh was warmly applauded ,by the laudience. Mr Grace sang " The O.wl " in excellent style, and was recalled, but would igrant no more, The concert was concluded by the Orchestra playing the overture from "Martha" which met with a very enthusiastio reception, The whole concert reflects great credit upon all taking part, and was evidently muoh enjoyed by all i present. There is one hint we should like to give Instrumental solos arc oucasionally of inordinate length, and it would be well if 'performers were to bear in mind that even of a good thing it is possible to have too muoh.
