According to a telegram whioh appeared in yesterday's issue the people of Ohristohuroh are not yet satisfied with regard to the attitude of the Government towards the Brunaer deviation of the Midland railway, and are asking them to come to some immediate understanding upon the matter. A telegram from the Minister for Public Works despatched after the question had been disoussed in .Cabinet was published «omedayß ago, and to'ttiiß Mr Wilson has made reply as follows:— Paragraph 1-: The Government requires the Company to oall for tendora and let a oontraot for the Kotuku section immediately the assent to the deviation is granted, and to further proceed without unavoidable delay with the ooustraotion of the remaining portions of the deviation line. Mr Wilsou replies:— " As the Company's works had been stopped for many months awaiting the consent to the deviation the Company would at once oall for tenders for the Kotuku seotion, and would let the oontraot with the usual provision for completion within the stipulated time. He only awaited further instructions from England before letting the rest of the the deviation line." Paragraph i, Mr Seddon Baited that the Government had beeu advlßed that the power of attorney whioh Mr Wilson held from the Company did not empower him to execute the contract whioh he hnd entered into between the Company and the Grey County Council. With the view, however, of furthering the work, the Government thought the difficulty might be got over if Mr WiUon would deposit the £2700, obtain from the Company a ratification of the oontraot with the Counoil, and deposit a further sum of £2000 to be forfeited in the event of the oontraot not being ratified within six months. Paragraph 5. The Government accepts Mr Wilson's assurance with regard to the running of the steamer on the lake. Paragraph 6. The Company to at onoe deposit £5000 as security for the completion of the Belgrove contract before 81st December, 1893. Mr Wilson replies to these :— . 11 As Co paragraphs 4. 5, 6 -The Board had been notified of the agreement made with the Giey County Gonnoil and had expressed their assent thereto ; that he would if Government wishvid, though quite unnecessary, send the oontraot Home by first mail for further consent; that he would deposit the £2700 immediately on gottiog a telegram thut the consent to the deviation had been given, subjeot to the deposit being made, and would also deposit the £5000 as already arranged, ainoe this was made a oondiiion ot the deviation, though not a part of the original oontraot ; but tho Company deolined to deposit aoy further moneys,"— Thus the matter stands at present, and it .is with this oondiiion of affairs thut the people ot Christ' ohuroh have expressed disaatisfaotion.
