TO THE EDITOR OF THE "EVENING MAIL."
gj B> —Having returned from the work at
Cable Bay (for the unemployed), I was shown a paragraph in your paper of the 9th instant, where Mr Brough for acting as a man has been dismissed. On making enquiries as to who is at the head of the Public Works department here I am informed that it is Mr Den ton, but the whole work seems to ba left in the hands of a carpenter. Now, why should thißO&rpenter be allowed to employ meohanica-1 labor by the day, when there are plenty of master mechanics who oan and would publioly tenders for the work, and these masters would employ the same amount of labor as this carpenter and do the work better and at the same oost. For instance, if this bridge painting was let by tender would the not difference the oontraot prioe and the day labor be more - than the time the oarpenter has cost in running tom(?f beating down, and bantering over . the prioeß of the materials required ; another thing it should be the unemployed painters first and, the labourers after. Is all this management of work and getting prices for material and beating down legitimate tradespeople left in the hands of the aforesaid carpenter, or have we a District Manager or engineer. I am, &c, Ohe of thb Unemployed.
