TOWN EDITION. Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 1886

1 Odb Wakefield correspondent writes :- A ■ large number of persons mustered in Mr W. ! Drager's paddock last night with the expecta- / tion of witnessing the performance of St | Leon's Circus. They went away disappointed, j however, owing to the non arrival of an important section of the caravan en route from the West Coast. There appears to be no doubt whatever of a performance to night at Wakefield, aud, judging by last night's disappointed crowd, the "hard times" do not pinch us so very keenly after all Certainly tue parade through the township yesterday was calculated to attract, and the music supplied by the band ,vas worth listening to. There are some vety pretty ponies in the collection, but the wild beasts will be one of the chief attractions.

For some reason or other, which is not easy for those at a distance to understand, there is a prolonged delay in introducing the Midland Railway Bill into the House. The last we heard of it was that on Monday it stood No. 12 on tha Order Paper, but since then no reference has been made to it. It is to be regretted that this important measure has not been passed some time ago, as the Syndicate formed in London to carry out the work are no doubt desirous of commencing operations as speedily as possible, aud they will scarcely be able to understand why, when the Parliament 1 as been sitting for nearly five weeks, no news of the Validation Bill has reached them. The accounts received from the North show that there are continued disturbance going on in the Lake district, where the settlers were at midnight driven out of their houses by shocks of earthquake, and, as may be easily imagined, were, after their recent experiences, terribly olarmed. That some serious convulsions are still occuning is clear, but it is to be hoped that the safety valvea through which euch enormous masses of steam are continuously escaping will be the means of preventing auy more serious eruptions. The face of the country as described hy the special correspondent of the Evening Post, whose very interesting telegrams will be found in another column, munb indeed present a weird and a desolate appearance when viewed from an elevation, covered as the hills and plains are with light colored volcanic dast. The photographer who is said to be taking views of tiio district is likely to reap a rich reward us the fruit of his enterprise. Owing to the difficulties experienced in travelling the first appearance of St. Leon's Circus is again postponed for a d.iy* The Company will perform v, Wukeneld this evening, and tomorrow evening without fail will appear in Nelson. MANY people were astonished at the sound of the explosions in Mount Tarauvera beiuff heard at such a distance us 300 miles. This however, is nothing to what occurred in the year 1815, when there was an eruption of Tomboro in the island of Sumbawa. The sound of the explosion on that occasion was heard at Sumatra, 970 miles distant as the crow flies. But that was a gigantic eruption ; the ashes ejected were carried 300 miles in one direction and over 200 in another, and at a distance of some hundreda of miles cinders were found floating on the S' a in a mass two feet iv thickness, THE monthly iuspection of tbo Volunteer" will take place in the Drill Shed this even' ing at 730. On Saturday afternoon a football match will take place ia tho Botanical Reserve, commencing at 215 between the College and Nelson Clubs. i
