TREE-PLANTING AREA GRANTED SCHOOL

DECISION AT KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING In response to a- letter from the secretary of the Kaiapoi School Committee asking if the council would grant the school a five acre portion of the rifle range reserve to be used for tree-plant-ing to mark' the centennial celebrations in 1940. It was decided at Tuesday's meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council that-the school committee be granted a long-term lease of five acres of the rifle range reserve at a pepper-corn rental. The Mayor, the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery, presided at the meeting. Other members present were Crs. H. . 0. Bills, A. E. BroAvn, R. C. Stewart, A. S. Palmer, A. Gordon, H. Rinaldi, W. Hart, J. P. Farrell, and A. Linklater. The Town Clerk, Christchurch City Council, wrote forwarding resolutions carried at the conference of local bodies held in Christchurch with reference to the Canterbury provincial court at the Centennial Exhibition at Wellington, 1940, and a history of Canterbury, to be published in book form, and the centennial memorial museum proposal, for consideration by the council. Consideration of the resolutions was deferred until enquiries had been made from the Centennial Historical Committee as to what decision had been made about the disposal of the proceeds of the sale of the history. The works committee reported that it had ben decided to proceed with the raising and widening of the stop-bank at Kairaki. The committee recommended that the corner of Bowler, and Hilton streets leading to the freezing works be sealed, and the purchase of timber and iron be authorised for repairing the conveniences at the Pines beach. The report was adopted. It was decided that the Mayor, Crs. Brown and Stewart be appointed a committee to meet the Waimakariri Harbour Board about the proposed amalgamation of, local bodies. The finance committee reported that alter perusing correspondence about the handing over of the borough hall property to the borough by the Education Department, there was nothing to prevent the council disposing of the property. A committee, comprising Crs. Gordon, Hart, Hills, and Linklater, was set up to report to the council on the disposal of the property to the best advantage. The financial statement showed:— Receipts since last meeting, £1372/4/9; debit bank balance, £2106/3/5. Accounts passed for payment totalled £1397/14/8. The Mayor, in moving a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr H. Mcintosh, referred to the great interest he had taken as Mayor and Councillor of the town and various local bodies. He spoke of the debt of gratitude he owed Mr Mcintosh for his assistance in lending his car when an appeal Avas made for the Hawkes Bay earthquake in the town. A motion of sympathy was also passed to Cr. H. O. Hills in the loss of his mother. The town clerk (Mr R. J. Smith) submitted a letter asking for a ruling on the payment of electric light accounts, a complaint having b@fen received concerning no discount after the duo date. It was decided that the date for discount be strictly adhered to. The electric lighting committee recommended that Mr H. H. Matthews, of Rangiora, be given a remuneration of £lO/10/- for his services to the borough in making out his report recently. The supervisor in his report stated that complaints had been received concerning men wasting time on the reserves and suggested a ganger be employed. Cr Rinald said it was ridiculous having a ganger employed when men on the main street were not supervised. It was decided that a ganger be appointed.
