LAWN TENNIS

DELEGATES MEET

Representative Fixtures

Arranged

NEW SECRETARY APPOINTED

The value of representative matches was the subject of a short discussion at an executive meeting of the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Associa-tion held last week. A programme of matches was drawn up for this season. It included five fixtures with other Sub-Associations. The president (Mr A. C. Fraser) said he thought that the representative fixtures helped to improve the standard of tennis. It seemed that too many had been arranged, but the Sub-Asso-ciation was now committed to play them. Mr I. Tweedie (United) expressed his General Committee’s objection to the United courts being occupied as they were last year for fixtures on several consecutive Saturdays. It was not fair to other players in the club. The Rev. Father McKay (Celtic) said it seemed to him that tennis today was too highly organised. One was either right in the swim, or right out of it. Mr Fraser said that neither the Rangiora nor Kaiapoi Clubs desired to have too many fixtures. Later the question of junior representative fixtures came up for discussion, when the president said that he thought these were of value to the younger players and he would not like to see them dropped. Mr B. Fitzpatrick doubted if they were of much use, to which Mr Fraser replied that the juniors were much keener than the seniors. Mr Fitzpatrick stressed the difficulty of finding enough clubs in North Canterbury with sufficient courts on which to play representative fixtures. It had to be considered that clubs were not overloaded with representative fixtures. It was decided to make an endeavour to arrange the programme as follows : January 15—v. Malvern Seniors at Rangiora ; juniors at Malvern. January 29—v. Mid-Canterbury at Ashburton. February s—v. Ellesmere. Seniors at Leeston; juniors at Kaiapoi. February 12 and 19—Handicap Tournament at Amberley. February 26 —v. Combined Sub-Asso-ciations at 'Ashburton. March 5, 12, 19, 26—Reserved for Championship Tournament at the Rangiora and United courts. April 2—v. Banks Peninsula at Kaiapoi. Ladder for Juniors After arrangements for the senior ladder had been completed, Mr Fitzpatrick asked why there was no ladder for junior players. How was a team picked, he asked. Mr Fraser said it was very difficult to pick a team. Circulars were sent to club secretaries asking them to nominate players. He thought it would be rather expensive for junior players to be asked to do the travelling necessary to compete in ladder play. Senior Postponement It was decided to enter senior and junior teams in the Town v. Country match on December 4. A senior team will also be entered in the Browning Shield tournament. As 32 players will be taking part in the match on December 4, it was decided to postpone the senior competition on that day. There will be no change in the intermediate and junior competitions. In connexion with the Browning Shield team, Mr Kelcher said he thought the team was too big. It should be limited to six. At present it was too expensive, considering the state of the Sub-Association finances. The president said that the rules had been approved by all the Sub-As-sociations. He was of the opinion that these tournaments should be self-sup-porting. A Secretary The appointment of a secretary was one of the main items on the agenda. The president said the Sub-Associa-tion owed a great debt to Father McKay for stepping into the breach. He had done excellent work, but a successor must now be appointed. It was suggested that the secretary’s work be divided between a secretary, a treasurer, and the match committees. Mr H. M. Denton was appointed secretary, and Father McKay agreed to act as treasurer.

Although it was made clear that the committee’s action Was hot to be taken as a precedent, it was decided to allow the postponed senior match between Kaiapoi and Rangiora to be played at a later date. The postponement was made at the request of the Kaiapoi Club, and was agreed to by Rangiora.
