NORTH CANTERBURY DO WELL

Representative Cricket

MATCH WITH SUBURBAN AT

HAGLEY PARK

In the fourteen years that North Canterbury have played an annual match against Christchurch Suburban, they have never been successful in winning on the turf wicket. In this year’s match, commenced on Wednesday, a surprisingly good display was given, and at the conclusion of yesterday’s play North Canterbury had completed two innings for a total of 457 runs. Suburban made 215 for their first innings, and at stumps had 143 in hand for four wickets. Lockhart won the toss and decided to bat. Devlin and Smith opened but in Mahoney’s first over Devlin went Ibw, and the score board read 2-1-0. Cassidy was the incoming batsman, and scored very quickly. He was particularly severe on the slow bowler, Hood, collecting a six and two fours off one over. He hooked Mahoney to the boundary, and was clean bowled when trying to repeat the shot off the next ball: 47-2-28.

Smith was batting very steadily, but soon lost McCracken (53-3-4). Ballinger was next to go, after scoring two singles: 64-4-2. Hertnon joined Smith but with the score at 76 Smith was beaten by a leg-break from Oliver: 765- He had quickly accustomed himself to the strange conditions, and was not troubled by any of the bowlers. His 37 was a valuable contribution. Stead, the next batsman, opened his shoulders and his total of thirteen consisted of three fours and a single: 996- Hoskins, next in, scored a single and was stumped by Mitchell when attempting a big hit off Oliver: 100-7-1. The ’keeper also claimed Hertnon’s wicket in Oliver’s next over: 105-8-11. Roberts and Lockhart added 29 for the ninth wicket, and the latter had just reached double figures when he returned one to the bowler. The board at the luncheon adjournment showed the score as 134-9-10.

After lunch Roberts and Southen became associated in a last wicket partnership which was the best of the innings, and the total reached 179 before Southen by bowled by Mahoney for 18.. Roberts finished with the good total of 46 not out, which included four fours. Both he and Southen had batted very confidently. Mahoney with four for 31 in 12 overs was the best of the Suburban bowlers.

Hoskins and Boberts opened the attack against Suburban. Hoskins bowled with plenty of pace and took four wickets for 39 off fourteen overs. Roberts bowled for 19 overs without a spell, and none of the batsmen attempted to take liberties with him. His average was two for 41. When Suburban had seven wickets down for 134 it looked as if North Canterbury might secure a lead on the first innings but Davis and Mahoney carried the score to 203. Suburban were all out for 215. Cassidy, who came on late in the innings, secured two wickets for 10 runs off three overs.

Second Day’s Play

North Canterbury batted much better on the second day, and the runs in the total of 278 were evenly divided. L Stead top scored with 56 not out. At stumps Suburban had lost four wickets for 143, and with six wickets in hand still required 102 runs today to win. Details:—
