FANCY DRESS.

CHILDREN’S DANCE AT KAIAPOI. More than 150 children took part in a children’s fancy dress dance in the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi, last Friday evening. The dance had been arranged to. raise money for the benefit of the Kaiapoi Unemployment Relief Funds, and the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) attended with Mrs. Sullivan, and Mr. and Mrs J. Matheson, also of Christchurch, t-o judge the costumes. This was not an easy task, but awards were eventually made as follows: Smallest girl: Ruby Bond I, Peggy Dixon 2; smallest boy: Lawrence Wilson 1;• best advertisement (Shop in Kaiapoi): Gladys Gordon (Ice Cream) I, Florence Miles 2; National Costume: Rimu Pitama (Maori) 1, Jack Cpup (Indian) 2, Mavis McCurdy (Hawaiian Girl), special; girls 9to 12 years: Jean Smith (Hungarian Girl); boys 9to 12 years: Ralph Matthews (Russian Prince); most original: Noel Price (Edmonds’s Baking Powder); Betty Williams (My Lady of the Bath); Enid Hunter (Wear More Wool), special; most economical: Eddie Trousselot (Golliwog), Avis Hutchinson (Paper Parcel); girls 2 to 6 years: Barbara Fowler (Miss Kewpie, 1932) 1, Rhoda Borland (Butterfly) 2; boys to 6 years: Tony Ramsay (King Cole) 1, Andrew Hyde (Nigger Minstrel) 2; boys 8 to 10 years: Arthur Shaw (Baker); boys to 6 years: Colin Wilson (Paper Parcel), Eric Dickie (Uncle Sam); Darby and Joan costumes: M. Warrington and Nancy Eustace. In addition there were dancing competitions, a lucky spot waltz being won by Mr. and Mrs. Hector Fowler, lucky spot one-step by Mrs. K. Baker and Mr. J. Hill, and a Monte Carlo by Miss J. Diepenheim and Mr. S. Richards. The members of the committee responsible for the arrangements were Messrs. A. E. Miles, E. T. Price, R. Bond, G. Garrett, C. Brown, E. Trousselet, E. E. Wilson, W. H. Nicholls, C. Kitto, and F. Isles, and a ladies’ committee in charge of Mrs. E. Trousselot. The children themselves had been trained by Miss A. A. Lynskey, whose pupils Avere assisted by those of Miss MattheAVS, and all by Mrs S. J. Richjards at the piano. The music for the dance and euchre tournament that folloAved the children’s function Avas played by Mrs. OgilA r ie, Mr J. JoAvers acting as M.C.
