Study Of Mud's Marine Life
AUCKLAND. Sat., (Sp.)—Mud from the bottom of the Hauraki Gulf is being investigated by the assistant director of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Mr A. W. B. Powell. .“Work in other countries has revealed a band of hard bottom at the edge of the continental shelf and we are anxious to find if the same applies locally,” said Mr Powell yesterday. “We know nothing of the bottom beyond the 100 fathom line and it may be that much needed new fishing grounds will ultimately be revealed by the work. “An accurate survey of the sea bottom over the commercial fishing grounds in particular should be as useful as a soil survey is in respect to farm land,” said Mr Powell. “Trips into the gulf are made seven or eight times a year. “The survey has been in progress for about three years and will continue for several years yet.”
