British Warships Not To Visit- Spain

LONDON, Thu. (1 p.m.)—The official decision not to permit British warships to visit Spanish ports was seen in diplomatic quarters today as an indication that Britain is still opposed to any move to bring Spain into the Atlantic defence arrangement, says Reuters political correspondent. A- British Admiralty statement made in reply to a question in Parliament, said that “for the present such visits would be inappropriate.” This makes it clear that British policy towards Spain has not undergone any modification as a result of the set-ting-up of the Atlantic Pact defence organisation in Washington this month. LONDON, Thu.—The Egyptian Government has approved the purchase from Britain of 61 military aircraft — 40 Spitfires, nine Halifaxcs and 12 de Havilland night fighters, says the Cairo correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. Spitfires are already extensively used in the Egyptian Air Force, which is cooperating today with the Royal Air Force in a major exercise for the defence of the Suez Canal.
