Hikurangi Group W. I.

Over 100 were present at Marlow Hall when the Hikurangi Group of Women’s" Institutes held a meeting. In addition to Helena Bay, Hikurangi, Opuawhanga, Maromaku, Ripo-nui-Jordan and Whakapara, there are two new member institutes, Otonga and Marua. The chairman (Mrs I Thorburn, Onuawbnngal welcomed members, new members and the guests, Mrs W. [arkwick and Mrs Griflin, president and secretary respectively of tlie Whangarei Federation. It was decided that the next meeting should be a picnic at Helena Bay in February nex A jathing oeau parade is to be held. Mrs G. Whatmough (Opuawhanga) was nominated as convener, and Mrs "tradney (Helena Bay) is to be chairnan for the next meeting. Each institute gave a quarter of an hour's entertainment at the group meeting.

Helena Bay opened the programme with a sketch, “The Sad Affair in Mangle Street,” Hikurangi followed with a pianoforte solo by Miss Speirs; a comic song by Mrs Platt: a duet by Mrs Speirs and Mrs Turnbull; a monologue, “Walking Out,” by Mrs Taylor and Mrs Gibbs; and finally a song by the choir.

OTHER ITEMS. Maromaku presented a sketch, “The Luck of It,” followed by a song by Mrs Going and a duet by Mrs Hay and Mrs Clarke. They concluded with a mime, “On the Park Bench.” Riponui-Jordan opened with the song "Bless this House.” Mrs Phyn then played some Scottish airs; Mrs Courtney gave an extract from "The Old Vicarage—Grantchester” by Rupert Brooke; the members sang Burns’ “Bonnie Doone,” and finished with some doggerel rhyming by Mrs Courtney. Opuawhanga W.I. ladies, bennif”lly dressed in period coTumes opened with a character song “Come to the Fair.” Mrs Bushby gave a pianoforte solo and finally the sketch “Mind over Matter” was presented. Whakapara ladies—in native dress—gave a most effective presentation—the Maori greeting chorus, poi; a solo by Mrs Aldred; haka. stick game; “At Home” chorus and farewell. The performers were Mesdames Rangi, Aldred, L. Shelford, N. Shelford, Cook, Johnson. Davis and Miss Luke.

Mrs Markwick and Mrs Griffin, who acted as judges, said how difficult it was to discriminate between such a variety of items. The winner of the day's competition was Whakapara W. 1., Opuawhanga being second and Hikurangi third. The bell and a bouquet were presented to Mrs Livermore, president of Whakapara, and bouquets to Mrs Markwick. Mrs Griffin, Mrs Thorburn and Mrs Courtney.
