Kaitaia War Memorial Plan
LAND WANTED
KAITAIA. Fri. (Sp.).—Provision should be made in the Kaitaia borough and Mangonui county war mcmmorial for a kindergarten and children’s playground as well as swimming baths, plunket and rest rooms and a band rotunda.
This was agreed to in principle by the recently-constituted war memorial committee at its initial meeting on Wednesday night, presided over by the Mayor (Mr D. Archibald, senr). The complete project should be in the form of a community centre surrounded by lawns and gardens, and a major feature would be memorial gates or a shrine to commemorate the lives sacrificed in World War 11.
Attending the meeting was a deputation from the Kaitaia Kindergarten Association under the leadership of Mrs M. A. Morrison. This asked for inclusion of the kindergarten building and attached children’s playing area in the scheme. The committee was advised that portion of tire land would require to be vested in the Education Board, and that the kindergarten project would carry a state subsidy.
As the proposed playground would be incorporated in this, a saving in funds would result.
The committee expressed itself as highly favourable to the proposal but the deputation was advised that its adoption would depend on the availability of land. ' Following discussion on this point a sub-committee was appointed consisting of the Mayor and 'Mr F. Holder to approach Mr L. H. Bell, a Kaitaia pro-perty-owner. Messrs C. H. G. Hedditch, A. M. Theed, L. Peace and N. E. Senn were appointed a further sub-committee to draft plans for the memorial project as a whole.
It was agreed that financial aspects should be discussed at the next meeting on Thursday November 24. Town and county Residents who lost relatives on service during the recent war have been asked to forward particulars of names and service numbers to the committee secretary. Mr A. J. Mackintosh, county clerk, Kaitaia, as soon as possible. GOLF ~
