Could Have Broken Tasman Record
AUCKLAND Fri., (P.A.).— A record for a commercial aircraft crossing from Sydney might easily have been broken this morning by the BCPA airliner Discovery, under charter to Tasman Empire Airways, but it circled over the city and Northland for 35 minutes to give the Whenuapai ground staff lime to prepare for its landing. The actual flying time was 4hrs 35 min.
The record, held by another DC-6, is 4hrs lOmin.
The plane which arrived today had a strong following wind from Sydney. The four engines were not used at full throttle.
“We just couldn't hold her back,” a member of the crew said.
