Mental Patient Swam Over Mile
AUCKLAND, Fri. (Sp.)—Found near Cox's Creek by mental hospital attendants, about 1,15 yesterday afternoon, a menial patient jumped into the harbour and began swimming toward the North Shore.
Securing a dinghy, Constable A, E. Hinton, of Grey Lynn, and two hospital attendants rowed out after the patient who was located about a mile out, still swimming strongly. When the dinghy came up with the man he threatened to capsize it if an attempt was made to take him on board.
However, he was finally persuaded to return to the shore, where he was taken in charge. He had been in the water for over an hour and a half.
The man disappeared from the men* tal hospital on October 19. The following day his l\ospital clothes were discovered by the police near Cox’s Creek. About 18 months ago the same man left the hospital without authority and travelled as far as Hamilton and Raglan and back to Auckland.
