Round World Air Race Plan
MELBOURNE, Sat. (Noon)—The Lord Mayor of Melbourne (Mr J. S. Disney) has disclosed round-the-world air race plans for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. The suggested route is from Melbourne to ttye United Kingdom, through Greece, where each competitor would pick up the Olympic Torch, thence to North America, stopping at Montreal, New York, and San Francisco, and via the Pacific route through Brisbane and Sydney and back to Melbourne. The first to land the torch at Essendon would win, but there be might also a handicap section based on the weight, range and speed of the aircraft. Mr Disney has suggested that the Victorian Government award £25,000 in prize money to the winners of the race. The Federal Minister for Air (Mr Drakeford) has suggested appointing an expert committee to decide details of the race plan.
