Niagara Lifeboat To Be Launch
AUCKLAND, Sgt. (P.A.)—One of the few relics from the sunken liner Niagara, a lifeboat that brought 50 passengers and crew members to safety after the ship struck a mine off Whangarei Heads, w : be converted to a launch by a keen young Devonport yachtsman, Owen Buckman, of Calliope Road. ' Buckman brought the lifeboat, P 4, a few weeks ago. It had been lying on the mudflats of Ngataringa Bay and the timbers were rotting and the paintwork blistering and peeling off. • Buckman loaded the hulk on a truck and took it to his home. 'After reribbing and putting in garboards and a keel, he intends to convert the P 4 into a 28ft launch.
There will be sleeping accommodation for at least four people. Buckman hopes to finish the job by the end of the year when he plans a trip, probably to Russell..
