Hydro-Electric Dept Short Of Vehicles
WELLINGTON, Fri. (Sp.)—The shortage of vehicles in the State HydroElectric Department is fast reaching a stage where it will have serious repercussions on the efficiency of operation. This is stated in his report on the North Island power system by the general manager of the department (Mr A. E. Davenport) who adds that difficulties in supply are appreciated. Mr Davenport states that difficulties are caused by the age and condition of the department’s vehicles, necessitating heavy maintenance. During the financial year ended March 31, 1949, six trucks were taken over from the army and 16 chassis received. Three of these ate being fitted with five-passenger cabs to afford greater all-weather protection for linesmen. The lack of new cars and commercial sedans to- replace worn-out vehicles and meet the expanded needs of the system gives rise to considerable concern.
