Footwear Industry Now De-Licensed
WELLINGTON, Fri. (P.A.).-The licensing of the manufacture of footwear under the Industrial Efficiency Act has ceased, according to . the Gazette. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Nordmeyer) said that this course was in line with Government policy. > It was not intended that the protection afforded by licensing should be permanent, but that it should remain only long enough to enable an industry to establish itself. The footwear industry had been brought under the Act in September, 1939, and had now become firmly established and able to supply all but a small part of New Zealand’s requirements of leather footwear. During the war years it had made a fine contribution to the Dominion’s war effort by the manufacture of over 3,000,000 pairs of footwear.
