Two Play Readings At Repertory

Two one-act play readings comprised the Whangarei Repertory Society’s fortnightly programme last evening. With an all-female cast “Women at War,” is a drama by Edward Percy. It deals with the patriotic work done by a group of village ladies during the civil war of Cromwell’s time. Supporters of both warring sides— King and Parliament —are gathered to-' gether in one house sewing bandages and clothing. ‘ Much discussion takes place on the relative merits of the sides, but understanding is reached when news is brought that two opposing ladies have each lost a son. The play was well sustained and presented by Mesdames A. W. Hewitt, J. C. Oldfield, G. Rapper, Misses J. Buckley, L. Short, P. Harty and I. Spalding. Mrs E. G. Craig was the producer. “That’s Murder,” by Lionel Shave, is a comedy-thriller play. The scene opens in a London flat with two detectives investigating a supposed murder. Numerous theories are advanced and many clues followed up, but the police are really baffled until the maid decides to tell all she knows —it was suicide after all. The comedy lines were well brought out and caused, much laughter from the audience. Mrs R. Downer was in charge of the reading and had as her cast Mesdames L. Quarrie, H. Rishworth and Miss H. Graham, Messrs J. C. Oldfield and R. H. Hitchcock.
