N. Korean Troops Invade S. Korea
TOKIO, Thu. (11.30 a.m.)—Over 4000 North Korean troops today surged over the 38th parallel on Ongjin Peninsula, killing upwards of 250 South Korean troops, stated army sources. The outbreak of fighting came on the eve of the visit by Marshal Chiang Kai-shek, who is expected to arrive tomorrow for anti-Communist pact talks with Korean President (Syngman Rhee). A South Korean Government official staled that the chief American adviser to the Korean Army (Brigadier-Gen-eral William Roberts) conferred all day wtih the Minister of Defence (Sign Sung Mo) on whether to send reinforcements to Ongjin Peninsula. Reports state that the North Koreans penetrated southward at three widely separated points on the parellel which divides the Russian-controlled North from, until recently, the American-con-trolled South. The North Korean Army is reported to have set up artillery inside South Korea, within easy shelling distance of Ongjin City.
